The prom night was around the corner and my excitement didn’t match that of most students who consider it the greatest night of their life. At the time, I wasn’t dating anyone and didn’t feel like asking anyone either.
As I was thinking about it, I saw my great-grandmother Alma sitting in her recliner, watching old black and white movies, and then it hit me.
“Granny, you ever went to prom?” I asked her. She looked at me and smiled. “Honey, back in the day, girls like me didn’t get asked to prom.”
“Would you be my date, then?” I asked her. Her answer? – “Let me see what I can wear.”

A week later, my great-grandma—who has endured so much throughout her life—donned the most beautiful dress, and I made sure to wear a matching tie.
As expected, the night was nothing short of magical.
To everyone’s amazement, despite being 89 years old, my great-grandma danced the night away, her joy lighting up the room.
The DJ even dedicated Always by Ella Fitzgerald to her, and as we swayed to the music, all eyes were on us. My friends eagerly joined in, wanting their turn to dance with her.
By the end of the night, she was crowned honorary prom queen, complete with a makeshift crown and a sash that read “Prom’s Best Spirit.”

When the night was over, my great-grandma whispered to my ear, “Honey, I’d never dreamed I’d ever have a night like this in my life.”
The following day, the local newspaper wrote about Alma and her incredible experience. Photos of her with the headline Great-Grandma Alma Takes Prom by Storm were shared online, sparking positivity and plenty of comments praising the elderly lady.
This experience taught me that we should always try to make the most of every moment.
