Donald Trump has often spoken about the possibility of Canada becoming America’s ’51st state’
Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to share an urgent message to Canadians as they head to the polls to vote on who they want as prime minister.
Mark Carney, who was sworn in as prime minister just six weeks ago after replacing fellow Liberal Party member Justin Trudeau, now faces off against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in a high-stakes election.
Just weeks ago, Poilievre’s party held a commanding 25-point lead in the polls, but Carney has significantly narrowed the gap, making the race too close to call.
Observers say the so-called “Trump effect” could play a crucial role in determining the outcome.
The 47th U.S. President has imposed new tariffs on Canada but suggested the country could avoid them altogether if it agrees to become America’s “cherished 51st state.”

Trump called Canada joining the U.S. “one of the great states anywhere,” adding that together, the two countries would create “the most incredible country visually.”
He argued that the division between the U.S. and Canada was simply the result of “an artificial line drawn right through.”
As an added incentive, Trump promised that Canada could keep its national anthem if it became part of the U.S.
“It’s so perfect as a great and cherished state. Keep ‘O Canada,’ the national anthem. I love it, I think it’s great keep it,” Trump said. “But it’ll be for the state one of our greatest states. Maybe our greatest state.”
As Canadians head to the polls today (April 28), Trump shared a message to Canadian voters on his Truth Social account.
The Republican president wrote:
“Good luck to the Great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses QUADRUPLE in size WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES if Canada becomes the cherished 51st [state].”

“State of the United States of America. No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Just look at how beautiful this land mass would be,” Trump declared.
“Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES, NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE! America can no longer afford to subsidize Canada with the hundreds of billions of dollars a year we’ve been spending. It makes no sense unless Canada becomes a State!”
In response, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre fired back, telling Trump to “stay out of our election.”
Poilievre emphasized: “The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box. Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state.”
He added: “Today, Canadians can vote for change to strengthen our country, to stand on our own two feet, and to stand up to America from a position of strength.”
As of now, Prime Minister Mark Carney has not commented on Trump’s remarks.
