Mark Carney, former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has won the race to become Canada’s next Prime Minister.
He takes over from Justin Trudeau at a critical moment, as Canada faces a trade war with its long-time ally, the United States.
The conflict began when Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, aiming to boost American industry. Additionally, he placed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods and Canadian energy imports.
Many view these tariffs as a hostile move against neighboring nations, while experts warn they could also drive up grocery and gas prices for U.S. consumers.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID.”
Trump claimed the “only solution” for Canada to avoid the tariffs would be to join the U.S. as its 51st state.
He also accused Canada of failing to “halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US.”
In response, Canada and Mexico vowed to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. imports.
Mark Carney wasted no time in firing back at President Trump.

In his speech, Mark Carney declared, “America is not Canada. And Canada will never, ever, be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
He continued, “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians never back down when challenged. The Americans want our resources, our water, our land—our country.
Think about it. If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life.”
Carney then added, “I know these are dark days—dark days caused by a country we can no longer trust.”

“We’re moving past the shock, but we must never forget the lessons: we need to take care of ourselves and stand by each other. Tough days are ahead, and we must face them together.”
Mark Carney secured a decisive victory on the first ballot Sunday evening, winning 85.9% of the vote within the Liberal Party, defeating his closest competitor, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
