An ABBA legend has tragically died.
After hearing the saddening news of the star’s passing, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute.
One person shared, “Heartbreaking to wake up to this news. The music world has lost a true legend—but his legacy will live on through the timeless songs he gave us.”
Another added, “Losing someone you’ve known and worked with for decades is never easy. I can only imagine what the members of ABBA are going through. But one thing’s certain—he left an unforgettable mark on the world.”
A third person wrote, “Such a sorrowful loss. My deepest condolences to ABBA. He brought endless joy to so many with his music.”

Michael B. Tretow, the brilliant sound engineer often hailed as the “fifth member” of ABBA, has sadly passed away at the age of 80.
A true visionary behind the scenes, Tretow was the mastermind who helped craft ABBA’s signature sound, working closely with the Swedish supergroup for decades. His creative genius was instrumental in producing every ABBA album from their 1973 debut Ring Ring to 1981’s The Visitors, with 2021’s Voyage being the only album he didn’t contribute to.
Beyond his studio work, Tretow was also a co-owner of ABBA’s record label, Polar Music, further cementing his deep connection to the band’s success.
Following news of his passing, the members of ABBA have shared heartfelt tributes, honoring the man who played such a pivotal role in their musical journey.

Benny Andersson told Aftonbladet, “I hope—and believe—that you always felt it, all those years since we worked together (and laughed endlessly) in the studio. Our music continues to live on, and that’s largely because of you. You made it timeless. You were a brilliant source of inspiration, a bringer of joy, and simply the finest sound engineer the world has ever known.”
Björn Ulvaeus emphasized that Tretow’s importance to ABBA “cannot be overstated,” calling him “a warm, generous person and a true friend.” He added, “Thank you for all the laughter and memories we shared.”
Anni-Frid Lyngstad shared with Aftonbladet, “You were the rock in our little studio world—always bringing creativity, warmth, and joy. No one could have filled that role the way you did. You will always be part of the ABBA sound, and you will never be forgotten.”
Agnetha Fältskog also shared a heartfelt tribute, saying:
“I’m so grateful I had the chance to spend some time with you just a few weeks ago. You were very ill, yet your laughter and sense of humor still shone through.
So many memories remain—your encouraging words during our recordings meant the world to me. We are heartbroken. A truly talented and one-of-a-kind person has left us. Sleep well, Micke—you’ll forever be in our hearts.”
Tretow’s passing was confirmed to Aftonbladet by his wife, his son, and ABBA’s longtime manager, Görel Hanser.
While no official cause of death has been disclosed, the band’s tributes have gently acknowledged that he had been battling illness.
Michael B. Tretow is survived by his wife and son.
