A legacy of health: Soong Mei-ling – longevity and fight against cancer

Soong Mei-ling, also known as Madame Chiang, was a prominent political figure who played an influential role in Chinese politics and foreign relations in the first half of the 20th century.

She was the second wife of the Nationalist Chinese president Chiang Kai-shek. However, even before marrying him, she enjoyed a good life since her family was prosperous and successful.

Soong Mei-ling was diagnosed with cancer at the age of just 40, but she managed to beat the disease and went on to live to 106, stunning millions.

Eventually, she passed away in 2003.

Her longevity and healthy lifestyle captivated many, as Soong Mei-ling emphasized the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the significance of disciplined daily habits and nutrition.

She maintained a strict bedtime routine, going to sleep at 11 p.m. and waking up at 9 a.m. Each day, she dedicated about two hours to creative activities like reading and drawing.

Soong Mei-ling began her mornings with a glass of cold water with lemon and prioritized fruits such as kiwis, pineapples, and lychees in her diet.

One of the key vegetables in Soong Mei-ling’s diet was celery, a staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Packed with proteins, carotenoids, carbohydrates, and B vitamins, celery is both nutrient-rich and easy to grow at a low cost.

It is believed to promote heart health, protect eyesight, aid in weight loss, and combat free radical damage.

Another essential part of her diet was spinach, a nutrient-dense plant rich in protein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and vitamin B2. Spinach is known for its anti-aging properties, its ability to enhance brain function, and its support for stomach and pancreatic health.

Soong Mei-ling followed the practice of eating small, frequent meals, consuming five meals a day while stopping at about 70% fullness. This approach kept her in a constant “semi-hungry” state, which she believed contributed to her longevity and well-being.

Even today, many women looking to maintain a healthy weight draw inspiration from her dietary habits.
