Tragedy struck on Thursday when 28-year-old soccer star Diogo Jota lost his life in a devastating car crash.
Jota and his brother reportedly veered off the road in Zamora, Spain, and their vehicle erupted into flames. As authorities investigate, chilling new details are beginning to emerge about the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
The football world is in shock following the sudden death of the Liverpool and Portugal forward, a beloved figure both on and off the pitch.
Jota’s passing comes heartbreakingly soon after a major milestone in his personal life just under two weeks after he married Rute Cardoso, his longtime partner and mother of their three children, including a newborn daughter.

Diogo Jota, 28, was traveling with his younger brother, André Silva, 25, when their vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. Tragically, both brothers lost their lives in the crash.
The accident occurred on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, close to the Portugal-Spain border. This stretch of road is known for its dangers recently ranked among Spain’s most hazardous highways due to poor conditions and a lack of safety barriers, according to the Organisation of Users and Consumers.
DNA Confirmation Required
Emergency crews responded quickly, but the fire spread rapidly, even igniting nearby vegetation. The blaze was so intense that the victims’ bodies were burned beyond recognition. Authorities confirmed that DNA testing was required to formally identify the brothers.
Investigators were able to link the wreckage to the Portuguese footballer through the supercar’s license plate and documents found inside the charred remains.
What Went Wrong?
While full details are still under investigation, authorities found a long skid mark near the crash site, suggesting the driver may have hit the brakes seconds before impact. A government source told the PA news agency that the crash is being investigated as a “possible speeding incident.”
Early findings suggest a tire may have exploded during an overtaking maneuver, causing the driver to lose control. The car reportedly a Lamborghini then slammed off the road and ignited.
A Heartbreaking Twist
At the time of the crash, the brothers were reportedly en route to catch a ferry to the UK, ahead of Liverpool’s pre-season training on Monday. According to CNN Portugal, Jota had recently undergone lung surgery and was advised not to fly likely explaining why he chose to drive instead.
Portuguese journalist Victor Pinto told CMTV, “Diogo sometimes chose to travel by road because of mild pulmonary issues. It wasn’t serious, but he preferred the ferry from Spain to southern England.”
He added, “It doesn’t make sense. This is a tragedy no one could have seen coming.”
Since the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, the football world has united in grief. Players from across the globe have paid tribute, including Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who shared a heartfelt message.
