A family enjoying a day at the beach in Melbourne, Australia, was left shocked when they noticed an eerie detail in the background of one of their photos.
The picture, taken at Carrum Beach, captured a father and his young daughter happily waving at the camera, seemingly unaware of what lurked behind them.
Upon reviewing the image at home, the family spotted something emerging from the water just a short distance away.
Their unsettling discovery gained traction after it was shared online, sparking debate among viewers about what the shape was, or if it was simply an illusion created by the waves.

The SES Chelsea rescue unit reported a shark sighting in the same area on the same day.
In a Facebook post, they shared: “We posted about a shark sighting just off the beach between Bonbeach and Chelsea. Later, we received a message from a family who follows our page. They had been at Carrum Beach earlier that morning.”
The post continued: “It was their little one’s first trip to the beach, and the gentleman’s partner took a few photos to capture the moment.
“When they got home and reviewed the pictures, they spotted something in the shallow water just behind them. Could this have been our shark?”
Social media users quickly chimed in with mixed reactions. Some believed the image clearly showed a shark fin, while others dismissed it as a coincidence.
One user commented: “It couldn’t be very big, considering the size of the dog and the depth of the water.”
Another expressed doubt: “That water looks too shallow for a shark with a fin that size, especially when you compare it to where the dog and the guy on the left are standing. Wouldn’t the other person behind them have noticed?”
A third person added: “I won’t rule it out, but it seems unlikely that a shark in such shallow water wouldn’t have been noticed by those nearby.”

This eerie beach sighting follows another recent shark encounter in Australia.
Just days before, a massive great white shark, reportedly the size of a boat, was spotted near Aldinga Beach, south of Adelaide, MailOnline reports.
The 13-foot predator was seen patrolling the coastline, prompting officials to issue a public alert.
Fishermen captured footage of the shark circling their vessel less than half a mile from shore, using their boat for size comparison to estimate the shark’s length.
Beachgoers were warned to stay out of the water as authorities monitored the situation.
The incident served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking beneath the surface of Australia’s coastal waters.
As for the mysterious shape in the family’s beach photo, the debate continues.
