It was yet another day when I needed to make a choice between what my essentials were and cut on purchasing too many products. Times were tough, and although I only got a handful of things from the store, I was still short on money. Embarrassment was written all over my face, but then, the cashier slipped me cash.
“I’ve been there,” she whispered.
I thanked her and headed to the parking lot when I noticed there was a note along with the receipt – “Take your child and leave. Now. Don’t look back.”
Honestly, I got scared because I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Was I in danger? My initial thought was to return to the store, but I decided to act upon that note and headed home instead.
Curious about the message, I returned to the store the following day.

I glanced around, but the cashier was nowhere in sight. I asked a few people, and before long, the store’s manager approached me.
“Looking for something specific?” he asked, noticing I’d been standing at the register for an unusually long time.
“Yes,” I replied. “I’m looking for a cashier who was here yesterday.”
I described her appearance, but the manager quickly informed me that she no longer worked there. Apparently, she had been fired the day after she slipped me cash.
With a cold and dismissive tone, he explained that she had violated store policy by giving money to a customer.
My heart sank. Did she really lose her job just for helping me and my child?
I wanted to know more her name, her contact information but the manager refused to share anything.

Determined to find her, I turned to social media, never expecting my post to go viral within days.
Before I knew it, local news outlets had picked up the story, and soon enough, the kind cashier who had helped me reached out.
I apologized for getting her into trouble, but she reassured me it was okay.
She then revealed something I hadn’t expected—she had noticed a suspicious person following me throughout my time in the store. That was why she wrote the note, afraid I might be in danger.
As for her act of kindness and losing her job? The media attention had caught the store’s corporate office’s attention, and they eventually offered her position back.
But she had already moved on. She had found a new job—one where kindness wasn’t a punishable offense.
