Sam Smith fans have defended the singer after a cruel ‘stage dive’ video went viral.
Smith is an English singer-songwriter known for popular tracks such as ‘Unholy,’ ‘Dancing with a Stranger,’ and ‘Stay With Me.’
They’ve won numerous accolades throughout their career, including five Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award, among others.
In recent years, Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has been subject to waves of backlash – from their ‘satanic’ stage performance to a bold outfit they wore at the Brit Awards.
But now they’re being defended by fans after a mean video began surfing on X, formerly Twitter.

A viral video shows a person in a Ninja Turtle costume attempting a stage dive—only to be left uncaught.
Social media trolls quickly seized the clip, falsely claiming the person was Sam Smith while also body-shaming them.
One misleading post was titled: “Sam Smith doing a stage dive at his Seattle show.”
The video sparked confusion among some viewers, with one asking, “Wait, what!? That was Sam Smith!?”
Another pleaded, “Please tell me this isn’t actually Sam Smith.”
Someone else simply questioned, “It’s really Sam Smith?”

Many of Smith’s fans quickly took to the comments to set the record straight, clarifying that the singer was not the person in the viral video.
One viewer simply stated, “That’s not Sam Smith.”
Another confirmed, “Despite various accounts spreading false information, Sam Smith did not stage dive at any concert.”
“The obsession right-wingers have with Sam Smith has combined with their affinity for fake news and misinformation,” one person remarked. “This is so clearly not Sam—these people have never fact-checked a day in their life.”
A fourth added, “You can’t even fact-check something this simple? It’s not Sam Smith.”

AP News confirmed the video actually shows a man attending a Vanilla Ice concert, with additional footage showing the American rapper performing his song ‘Ninja Rap’ onstage.
The news outlet reached out to Smith’s spokesperson, Lisa DiAngelo, who also confirmed the video doesn’t show the ‘Latch’ singer.
The costumed individual remains unidentified and it’s unclear what happened to him after the stage dive, however, some people shared well wishes for him in comments, with one writing: “I really hope he’s okay.”
