Our bodies often offer subtle signs that something isn’t right with our health, we just have to learn to listen and not ignore the cues, such as unusual pain, persistent discomfort, or any changes in bodily function, including bubbles in the urine.
Dr Shirley Koeh, a medical practitioner, shared a video in which she explains what it means when someone notices bubbles in their urine.
First thing first, she explains that it is important to notice if the presence of the bubbles is just a one time things, which would mean the person needs to hydrate, or the bubbles appeared more than once.
According to her, the presence of bubbles in the urine may indicate the presence of protein in the urine, and the reasons for this can be various.
“If you’ve taken steps to stay hydrated and the bubbles still persist, we need to explore further possibilities,” she explained, highlighting two types of tests that can provide clarity.
The most accurate option is a lab analysis of a urine sample, which can detect the presence of microalbumin—a small protein that may appear in urine.
The second option is a simpler approach: a basic urine dipstick test.
If the tests detect the presence of protein, it may indicate conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic infections (like HPV), autoimmune diseases, or kidney damage caused by prolonged drug use or alcohol misuse. These issues can lead to severe kidney damage or even kidney failure.
Dr. Vikas Desai, a urologist at Delnor Hospital, adds that bubbles in the urine can also be a potential sign of blood cancer.
At pregnant women, foamy urine may indicate a serious condition known as preeclampsia. These individuals need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
